South Hills and Moffat View residents protesting for employment

CALM between residents and management of Steeldale KFC was restored on October 18.

This follows after a group of residents from South Hills and Moffat View took their dissatisfaction of being unemployed to Steeldale Shopping Centre disrupting the flow of business.

The protester blocked the centre’s main entrance as they kept on chanting ‘we want jobs’.

The protesters said they are angry with the management of the newly built KFC since they only hire people from other areas. Protesters told the COURIER they have a number of unemployed young people in their area and it pains them if one of their own aren’t hired while shops keep on being built.

Teelo Mamefa explained to the COURIER all they want is to see people from their area getting employment.

“We can’t live like this. We need jobs so we can be able to feed our families. We won’t stop protesting for our jobs until they hire us.

“It’s painful to see other people from other areas working at our shopping centres while we from the area don’t have jobs,” said Mamefa.

On the day of protest, Moffat View SAPS were on scene monitoring the situation.

KFC’s Africa public affairs director Zinhle Modiselle said KFC prides itself in the diversity of its team members from all backgrounds and geographics.

“We were made aware of concerns of the local community relating to the employment of local residents at our Steeldale restaurant and have since engaged with the local ward supervisor to resolve the matter.

“Six members of the community have since been recruited by KFC, and will undergo the necessary training, in order to start with their duties when KFC Steeldale opens,” said Modiselle.
