Theft continues unabated at Reuven Retirement Village

The elderly residents are appealing to any donor in a position to replace the razor wire to come forward.

THERE has been an outcry by senior citizens at Reuven Retirement Village because of the theft that occurs there frequently.

According to the residents, intruders are now stripping their infrastructure at will, and are removing anything that has a resale value.

In the past weeks they have again taken a number of vehicle batteries, copper piping for water, pieces of furniture, electrical wiring and even going to the extent of removing brass caps on the drain pipe elbows.

One of the residents at Reuven Retirement Village said the residents have patched up a portion of the razor wire fencing, but to no avail, as the gang have just broken open another section.

“The wire is so old and dilapidated that it can be breached with very little difficulty.

“One of the last working internal street lights, that is assumed to illuminate the entry and exit points, has been vandalised and then repaired by residents.

“On the third occasion, the intruders damaged the wiring so badly that it will be difficult to repair,” he said.

The elderly residents are appealing to any donor in a position to replace the razor wire, even if it is just the section along the Klipriver Drive border, to come on board as part of their social responsibility programme.

They are also requesting the assistance of a security organisation with electronic capabilities to help. as it would go a long way to stamping out this scourge.

Another resident said there are people inside the village who are culprits.

Greg Mackett, Reuven Retirement Village manager, said there are rumours that thefts are inside jobs.

“We only have allegations, there is no concrete evidence that the thieves are from inside the village. However, we will take all the allegations to the police to investigate.

“There are people who are not supposed to be here as they are not senior citizens; the City will deal with them.

“We always try to do our best for our elders. Reuven Retirement Village has some good news other than these thefts,” he said.
