Housing Department is getting tough on illegal residents

Many of the residents of Reuven Complex have expressed their approval of this step, which will lead to ultimate safety and security.

THE regional head of Housing Department (Region F) JJ Davids sent out notices to tenants of Reuven Retirement Village following a recent investigation which found that tenants are harbouring family members and friends.

Davids said that this is a contravention of the lease agreement and legal action will be taken against the perpetrators.

He requested the tenants not to give unregistered people accommodation because the retirement villages are meant specifically for the elderly pensioners.

Those who do not comply with instructions of their lease agreement will see the cancellation of their lease and legal action will be instituted, which could lead to eviction by court order

Many of the residents of Reuven Complex have expressed their approval of this step, which they believe will lead to ultimate safety and security.

“There are too many illegal people living at Reuven Complex. Many of them show an utter disrespect for the elderly. They openly consume alcohol, with no concern for the elderly passing by.

“They talk loudly, and sometimes swear, using the most vulgar language and fight. These people must vacate the premises immediately,” said a 78-year-old woman.

Car owners of the retirement village continue to suffer from having parts of their cars stolen, and they also complain of burglaries that they experience. This has been reported to the police, but no one has been arrested.

“Many of us think it is an inside job, or that the thieves are being assisted by these illegal tenants. Where does the money come from when they can drink from morning to night and have their occasional braais? Many of us will feel much safer if the illegal tenants are evicted,” said a 69-year-old resident.
