Johannesburg Central police officers arrested a 33-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on February 23 at the corner of Commissioner and Nugget streets in Joburg CBD.

According to Johannesburg Central Police Station’s communications officer Xoli Mbele, the officers were busy with their daily stop-and-search duties.

“They stopped a white taxi with passengers, searched everyone and discovered a firearm and live ammunition on one of the passengers.

“The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in the commission of serious and violent crimes,” said Mbele.

The suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

The station commander, Brig Irvin Perumal, commended members for removing an unlicensed firearm from the suspect.
