Joburg Water not in lockdown

Joburg Water to provide residents with services during the lockdown.

Johannesburg Water (JW) is currently providing water and sanitation to about 5.5 million residents of the City of Johannesburg.

The aim of JW is that residents of the City get sustainable basic services such as water during the lockdown.

The operations will go on as usual as JW will try to protect and minimise the impact of the Covid -19 pandemic to our workforce and residents of Johannesburg by implementing the following:

• The entity operations teams will be on the ground daily to attend to urgent burst pipes. We have increased our capacity, especially on weekends and holidays to ensure that residents have access to all services.

• Water is life and sanitation is dignity. The entity will enhance services (water tanks) in informal settlements across the City and desludging of chemical toilets will also be prioritised.

• Residents who are on Expanded Social Package (ESP) will continue to get water until the lockdown is over and they can renew the service at the nearest customer centre.

• To minimise movement and encourage social distancing, we will be implementing the “Work From Home” directive from the executive mayor, councillor Geoffrey Makhubo with effect from March 25.

• New water cuts across the City will not be affected during the lockdown period as access to water is necessary to combat the spread of Covid-19.

• An agreement was reached with the service provider to increase the number of desludging trucks with a further four, as well as introducing a shift system to increase the number of services in informal settlements.

• The procurement of additional water tanks (which will be placed as and when required to improve nominal water supply) is in the final stage. Delivery is expected by March 27.

JW management calls on all residents of the City to improve their space hygiene by applying the following health measures:

• Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.

• Sneeze unto your elbow or tissue.

• Avoid handshakes.

• Visit your nearest health facility or doctor if you have flu-like symptoms.

• Avoid contact with live animals.

• Observe good personal hygiene at all times.

We urge all residents of the City to continue to log calls using the below channels to improve turn-around times and improved customer experience.
