City of Johannesburg receives donation of 25 000 masks

The donation, received by the City on May 14, is the first batch of 50 000 which the company is donating to the City.

MMC for Health and Social Development councillor Eunice Mgcina accepted a donation of masks from Polo South Africa on behalf of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ). CoJ received a major boost when the high-end clothing manufacturer Polo South Africa donated 25 000 masks for use in the fight against Covid-19.

The donation, received by the City on May 14, is the first batch of 50 000 which the company is donating to the City. Polo SA managing director Mark Oliver said the company was moved to make the pledge to contribute 250 000 face masks to major metropolitan cities in the country, including Johannesburg.

This is part of their support for their country and to assist the government’s attempts to flatten the pandemic’s curve.

“This is our small way of supporting the call from our President of us all coming together as a nation to fight this unprecedented crisis. It is our way of caring for our communities in this time of extreme crisis.”

In accepting the donation on behalf of the City and the executive mayor councillor Geoffrey Makhubo, Mgcina said the gift would go a long way in boosting the much-needed protective equipment stocks for the City’s health workers.

She further said that the donation was a true demonstration of public and private partnerships and that government could not carry out the fight against the spread of the pandemic alone. It needed all partners to be on board, particularly private sector partners.

“When the executive mayor made a call to business partners that we needed their assistance in the fight against Covid-19, they responded positively. And we are really grateful that this positive response continues, as demonstrated by Polo SA today.”

We will definitely make sure that this donation reaches all our staff members in all our departments, some of whom are in the frontline in the fight against this disease.

“Also most importantly again, our councillors will also benefit as there is now an expectation that they must go all out and make sure people are educated and aware and understand how critical it is to respond to the call to wear masks in line with the lockdown regulations that are still in place,” said Mgcina.

The MMC said further that the donation would also come in handy in efforts to contribute to the betterment of the lives of the City’s people and that she hoped the handover is the beginning of a long-lasting partnership with the company.Issued by the City of Johannesburg.
