MEC Mazibuko mourns the untimely passing of an accomplished senior police officer

“As the Gauteng Provincial Government, we convey our heartfelt condolences to General Pharasi's family, friends and colleagues,” said MEC Mazibuko.

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, has expressed sadness following the untimely passing of one of Gauteng’s most dedicated, accomplished and senior members of SAPS, Maj Gen Theko Pharasi.

Pharasi (59) succumbed to a short illness, which led to his untimely death on June 29. He was the deputy provincial commissioner responsible for Visible Policing at the time of his passing.

The long-serving member of the SAPS joined the policing fraternity in 1980 as a constable and never looked back. Pharasi moved up the hierarchy in the early stages of his career that spanned almost 40 years.

He was an intellectual of note. To his credit, he possessed various well sought after qualifications and acquired accolades and medals synonymous with a seasoned and accomplished officer.

Mazibuko expressed sadness following the general’s untimely passing. “The passing of Maj Gen Pharasi is a massive loss to the policing fraternity and the entire Gauteng City Region. Death has robbed us of an accomplished officer, a disciplinarian of note, yet very humble and a passionate figure in police. General Pharasi was indeed a transformational leader, a man of great academic and professional acumen.

“During the start of the sixth Administration, General Pharasi was instrumental in coming up with creative ways to implement strategies to fight corruption within the ranks of law enforcement. He was a man of integrity, a scarce attribute in the society we live in. General Pharasi possessed an ethically and morally sound judgment at all times,’’ said Mazibuko.

Mazibuko also wished the family and colleagues strength during these trying times. “As the Gauteng Provincial Government, we convey our heartfelt condolences to General Pharasi’s family, friends and colleagues.”
