GANSRA team up with Siya Kunene to clean up new south

“Once we clean our streets, our dignity will be renewed and hopefully it goes viral showing how people coming together can achieve great work.”

Anton Gilmore, GANSRA green team with Siya Kunene and GANSRA director Gen Durand teamed up to clean the streets of the New South on August 21.

“We have opted to do another clean-up at the Comaro and Boundary streets area from the Engen garage in Oakdene and the intersection of Bellairs and True North Road in Glenvista on September 1, Spring Day,” said Durand.

“The idea is to invite community members to join us and arrive with a spade, rake, bags and brooms and remove all the dirt in the street gutters and pavements along the double lane for one hour of community service.”

She told the CHRONICLE the slow degradation of their area has brought property value down, which is a sign of hope and dignity that has been lost over time.

They have also selected 20 volunteer people from the streets who will join in. These volunteers will at the end of the day get food and clothing in return for the effort.

“Anton Gilmore has during lockdown achieved 1 000 plus hours with 20 people, all doing three man-hours at least,” said Durand.

During lockdown, Anton also fed over 2 000 people with the Walking Tall Project he runs with Eric and Paulina Houniet and Marie Ellis“Once we clean our streets, our dignity will be renewed and hopefully it goes viral, showing how people coming together can achieve great work,” she said.

Durand said if anyone is keen to get involved they can arrive at the Engen garage at Comaro Crossing or Engen at Glenvista Mall from 10am till 1pm.

“As Meyer Benjamin said, ‘I need to #adoptmypatch‘. At least an hour community service per week by all residents would reverse the degradation of our society.”

Contact Gilmore on 083 653 0180, Kunene on 082 530 6630 or Durand on 072 688 1571 if you would like to donate tools, food, 25 reflective vests or clothing.

“We can embrace and reward those who help themselves and society,” said Durand.

If anyone of the area in the south requires help they can send a WhatsApp message with an address to any of the above numbers.
