Chat with a local Maskandi artist
Mlethwa has won two SATMA awards for best newcomer and best video.
With eight albums under his belt, Maskandi artist Mlethwa Majola from Booysens is still going strong because his music contains a message for all.
He started in 1998 with a group called Izintombi zikaMajola. He then went solo in 2010 with the album Siyabakhumbula.
Mlethwa believes Maskandi taught him perseverance and love because often this genre has not been popular.
“I am glad that people are now taking this genre seriously and they realise it is not only for Zulu-speaking people but for everyone. As Maskandi artists we appreciate how people have embraced us and we will continue to produce songs that talk to the soul of the people,” he said.
Mlethwa has won two SATMA awards for best newcomer and best video, and he was also acknowledged for the most downloaded music. He has done much in his community, including performing, hosting events for children and also motivating offenders in prisons.
He said he is concerned about the lack of opportunities in the South.
“We ask those in power to help us and to use us in spreading community messages. We are perfect conduits to deliver messages to the masses.
“We urged our councillors and people in government to assist us as this is our trade and we support our families with whatever we get. So support from the community and authorities will be paramount,” explained Mlethwa.
His music can be found on all music platforms and those who want his CDs, especially the new release, Vumani, can contact him on 078 133 6428.
