Wonderful break for artist in the middle of lockdown

Marco Basson was signed for a deal with David Gresham in the middle of lockdown.

The opportunity of a lifetime came for Meyersdal singer Marco Basson when he caught the ear of David Gresham and signed an exclusive artist and publishing deal with his company.

For the science teacher at Trinity House Glenvista, this deal is the culmination of years of interest and love for music and singing. He has recently released his new single, Ghost Town.

Marco grew up in Potchefstroom and the singing bug caught him early.

“I started around Grade One when I, like many little brothers, wanted to follow in my brother’s footprints,” said Marco speaking about where his love for music comes from.

“He is five years older than me and when he started taking singing lessons I wanted to as well. My parents eventually gave in, which looking back is something I’m very glad about.”

He continued to sing throughout his school and university career, including taking part in choirs and musicals. The musicals he said was a major forming point for him because it allowed him to build confidence.

“I think I am very lucky to have found something I am so passionate about at a young age.”

The news about the contract Marco said came as a surprise to him.

“It was the last thing I was expecting in the middle of lockdown,” said Marco.

According to him, David Gresham heard him singing after he submitted some of his short Instagram videos as part of the Sing for Us talent search.

“I was extremely excited when the deal was signed. It is something I’ve been waiting for such a long time.”
Marco told the RECORD he is very excited for the next while as it is at the start of a performer’s career where they are free to experiment.

“While it is easier to just do a cover as eight-tenths of the work has already been done. This is different for an independent and original artist. This is the opportunity for you to find yourself.”

According to Marco, he has a love for pop music. Voices like Brian Adams and Michael Bublé are among those he counts as influencing.

“Someone like Bruno Mars is the ultimate. No one can say anything he does is wrong.”

For Marco the nostalgia and power that music holds is very palpable.

“I listened to songs recently that I first heard with my brother as children. The music instantly took me back to where we were sitting and experiencing the same feelings I had the first time I heard it. Music makes us a better society.”
