What the teachers think

Alberton's teachers are excited to see their learners back for 2021.

Ahead of the reopening of schools for learners, the RECORD visited some of our local schools or asked local teachers about their preparation, readiness and excitement to welcome the learners back. The teachers had a lot to say. We had a look at what it takes to ready our schools for 2021.

Here is some of what the teachers had to say about what learners can expect and what they have been doing:

André McMaster – Laerskool President Steyn: “Don’t let the uncertainty of 2021 halt your progress. Our Grade Four to Seven learners can look forward to daily rotation. In this manner, they will be in a different class with a different teacher every day. By doing it this way our teachers get much-needed contact with their learners. Our learners can also look forward to start practising their favourite sports.”

Luzette Wilson – Hoërskool Alberton: “The joy I experience in my career is my drive. The learners who keep you afloat by working with you, supporting you and believing in you as their teacher is what matters. I love my job. Our learners have many challenges staring them down and confronting them. Some will be easier to overcome, but for those that are more difficult they can know they have a team behind them that will support and help them.”

Candice Fernandes – Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School: “Teachers are more focused than ever. Our learners can look forward to meaningful lessons. Teachers are also hungry to work, so learners can expect lessons full of passion. The only constant is change. Learners should be aware that you can’t always control everything, but your attitude towards change can already put you one step ahead.”

Simone Cronje – Hoërskool Alberton: “Covid-19 has forced us to change many structures in the school but has given us the opportunity to be creative in finding alternative methods of raising spirits, marketing, collecting funds and doing school activities. We expect learners to take responsibility for their work.”

Melanie Steenkamp – Laerskool Randhart: “When we welcome new learners it is amazing how easily they understand the new rules. The children are so used to the new way of living. They have even started playing new games to keep their social distance. Children adapt very easily to new things.”

Ingrid Laubscher – Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School: “Learners need to remember they are working towards their future. They have to work hard and can’t fall behind. Parents need to support learners, motivate them and teach them the importance of hard work.”
