City focuses on water quality

The MMC has committed to improving the overall performance of all entities under his portfolio, stating that improvements in the department are a result of the improved partnerships with the private sector through the extended #KleenaJoburgReloaded campaign.

MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department ((EISD)) councillor Mpho Moerane visited the Joburg Water’s Cydna Laboratory in Houghton on March 18 during the commemoration of Water Week, which ended on March 19.

The laboratory is a hub for quality control regarding water in the City, where tests for potable and effluent water are carried out.

The City’s water quality continues to be among the best in the world, having won numerous awards as a result. The Joburg Water (JW) lab is a flagship that has enabled the City’s water entity to remain at the top and ahead of its peers in terms of performance and production of best-quality water.

The MMC took a tour of the facility to experience first hand how the City’s water is treated and processed, and how wastewater is treated to make it potable before being sent back to the mainstream system for consumption, ensuring its world-class quality.

The City’s water is of the Blue Drop standard. The state-of-the-art laboratory is manned by experts in the field, who work around the clock to ensure that the City’s water remains world-class.

However, of the last two quarters of 2020/2021, there has been a slight decline of 0.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter’s 99.9 per cent.

The MMC and his EISD water directorate are working with JW to ensure that they continue to improve in the coming quarters. The current results are still an excellent achievement by JW as they exceed their target by 0.7 per cent, registering a 99.7 per cent drinking water quality for the residents of the municipality.

The MMC has committed to improving the overall performance of all entities under his portfolio, stating that improvements in the department are a result of the improved partnerships with the private sector through the extended #KleenaJoburgReloaded campaign, which his office will soon unveil. The MMC further emphasised that active citizenry is the key to ensure that the residents of Johannesburg get world-class services from the municipality.

He also encouraged the executive at JW and the lab to continue their hard work and guaranteed them support in ensuring that the City will find ways to ensure their work is appreciated by the metro’s residents.
