WATCH: Decaying infrastructure poses a danger for tenants of South Hills flats

Most of the old flats in South Hills have deteriorating infrastructure.

Cliff Arendse from Malut Court, corner Kliprivierberg and Quantock roads in South Hills, is tired of water dripping from the ceiling into his flat.

Decaying infrastructure at the municipal-owned building seems to be the cause of these leaking pipes.

He said one day his flat was almost submerged underwater. “The water is seeping through the roof into our bathroom.

When reporting the leak, we were told that they will come to fix this but until now nothing has happened. Our local councillor Faeeza Chame knows about this.

“We had to do our investigation and we found the leak comes from the flats above us. The steel pipes are rusty and rotten. Four years ago this was fixed and it seems that they just covered it without a proper repair,” explained Arendse.

Chame said it is inhuman to live in these conditions. “Most of the flats in South Hills and Moffat View had deteriorated over the years.

“The infrastructure is damaged to such an extent that it poses a danger to the tenants’ lives and can also cause unforeseen sickness. Lack of maintenance is a real culprit. The housing department was informed and promised to send out a contractor to this unit,” she said.

Department of Housing and the office of the MMC for Housing were contacted. The COURIER is still waiting for their response.
