Traffic light man endures harsh living conditions

Thomas is well-known in and around Meredale.

Thomas Mashele, who lives and stays at the intersection of Columbine Avenue and Main Road, Southgate, withstands any weather conditions.

He is there day and night, come rain or shine, and has been there for quite some time now. Thomas, who is a Mozambican, is familiar to most people of Meredale.

Stan Kunene, who lives in Meredale, said he used to tend gardens at some of the houses in the area.

“I’m concerned for Thomas because at his age he needs a shelter. I would pass him there at his usual spot ‘directing traffic’. Surely, something needs to be done,” explained Stan.

When the COURIER visited him he made it clear he doesn’t want to be moved there, he is ‘fine’.

“I’ve been here most of the time and I’m fine. Passers-by would often give me food and others are generous enough to give me blankets. It is so cold these days; however, I am okay. And there’s no way I’m leaving this spot,” said Thomas.
