Get jabbed and get your pension

For the pensioner's second jab, they will be directed to their nearest non-medical site to ensure they get vaccinated.

Thousands of pensioners will be able to get their first Pfizer vaccine and collect their pensions on July 6 and 7.

The Gauteng Department of Health has set up mobile vaccination sites at Sassa pay points to target persons 60 years and older.

From 06:00 until 15:00 on both days, pensioners willing to take the jab will be vaccinated with the two-dose Pfizer vaccine.

Yamkela Dlunge, assistant director at Provincial Healthcare Promotions for Johannesburg, said, “We have decided to target Sassa pay points to quickly educate, encourage and vaccinate pensioners so we can get as many elderly people protected against this Delta strain.”

As the Pfizer vaccine is a two-jab vaccine, pensioners will be given a 42-day return date for the next jab. Layla Campbell, manager of Healthcare Promotions in the City, said, “For their second jab, they will be directed to their nearest non-medical site to ensure they get vaccinated.”

In Region F, a vaccination site has been set up at Joburg Central Post Office, Marshalltown and 3 724 is the expected number of people to be vaccinated.

Since opening Covid-19 non-medical sites on May 26 in the various city regions, over 40 000 over 60s have been vaccinated. This is still short of the 500 000 mark set when vaccinations opened in May possibly due to hesitancy, fake news or beliefs. The reality is that while this may be the case, Covid-19 infections are rising at an alarming rate.

This has spurred government to start vaccinating persons 50 years and older as well who can register online or walk in to get the jab. Soon this will be extended to those aged 18 to 39 years.

As of July 5, Gauteng had 709 628 confirmed Covid-19 cases, 13 603 deaths, 604 556 recoveries and 91 469 active cases.

Thus far no serious complications or deaths have been reported of any person 60 years and above who has been vaccinated.

To receive the vaccine you need to pre-register on an online registration system known as the Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS).

The EVDS is available on the website and follow the registration steps.
