EOTOF mourns the death of Mayor Jolidee Matongo
Earlier on the day, Mayor Matongo encouraged residents to register to vote.
The Each One Teach One Foundation (EOTOF) has learned with shock and sadness about the accident which claimed the life of the newly elected Mayor of City of Johannesburg Jolidee Matongo on September 18.
Matongo was part of an ANC elections programme in Soweto, with President Cyril Ramaphosa, Premier David Makhura and other ANC leaders encouraging residents to register to vote.
Matongo was elected unopposed to serve as the mayor of Johannesburg from August 10 until his death on September 18.
The tragedy of losing such a dynamic and tried and tested leader of the glorious movement is unbearable.
A Soweto-born seasoned politician who grew up in the streets of Dube, where at the tender age of 13, he took up student politics in the historic township and has risen through the ranks, from serving as a member of the Soweto Student Congress (SOSCO) and the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) to becoming the regional chairperson of the ANCYL in Johannesburg.
Matongo has served as a member of the Johannesburg ANC Regional Executive Committee for 18 years. During that time, he became head of media and communications of the region, where he was also elected the region spokesperson for two consecutive terms.
His commitment to serving with the utmost efficiency and accountability in the local government sphere saw him appointed as the City’s MMC for Finance.
The EOTOF conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Matongo family, friends and loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery to the mayor’s protectors who are fighting for their lives in hospital. We wish them strength and fortitude during this difficult time.
