Landlord and tenants’ squabbles continue

The landlord says people need to pay rent.

Nomakhephu Lithuli, a tenant for Kenneth Bongo, whose house is in Prairie Street in Rosettenville, thinks her landlord wants her out because of her outspoken nature.

According to Lithuli, Kenneth is not the rightful owner of the house and she feels she is victimised because she is vocal.

“I moved here in March. I’m not working full time, I do piece jobs here and there and I cannot afford to pay rent. So, I pay what I can afford.

“I have been told that this house was sold on auction. Now, Kenneth wants me out but I don’t have any place to stay,” she said.

The COURIER spoke to Kenneth and he confirmed that the said house is his and he wants to do renovations.

“I don’t live there for now. I have a place at The Hill where I live. The problem started when I bought the house. The previous owner did not tell me that there were tenants, so I bought the house with the tenants unknowingly. Because of lockdown, I didn’t evict them, including Lithuli.

“However, you cannot stay in someone’s house for free, you need to pay, especially for water and electricity. I still pay a bond for this house. Lithuli tells people who live there that they must not pay. How are we going to move forward if people don’t pay for rent?” he asked.

The COURIER will keep the readers informed about the developments of this story.
