Katlehong author pens first biography on surviving abuse

“I moved around different centres at a young age since I was kicked out of the house because my mother accused me of sleeping with my stepfather.”

Katlehong Greendoor ambassador and author Gugu Mofokeng (53) published her first biography titled Acts of a Selfless Leader after surviving domestic violence.

The book details Mofokeng’s life journey and shares how she overcame abuse through God’s way, with the help of her mentor Janet Marie Napper.

Mofokeng met Napper when she was on the verge of committing suicide while fighting her way out of a two-year toxic and abusive relationship.

Her voice starts appearing in part two of the book in the chapter titled Lost Everything and Found Myself. She explains how she lost her house, her dignity and self-worth.

Part of her ear was bitten off while she was trying to escape from her ex-partner.

According to Mofokeng, her last relationship was the worst compared to her four previous relationships of a similar nature, one being her 10-year marriage.

She met her ex-partner while running away from another ‘psychopath lover’.

She said she had to run away from him several times when she realised the developments of his abusive behaviour after the honeymoon phase of the relationship.

But she kept going back whenever he apologised because she was blinded by love.

Her ex-lover accused her of cheating with his friends and assaulting her. He also abused her financially and emotionally and manipulated her into feeling guilty for his actions.

She said the abuse she experienced in her relationships was enabled by her background and the abuse she endured from home.

“I moved around different centres at a young age. I was kicked out of the house since my mother accused me of sleeping with my stepfather. I ended up moving around shelters and ultimately getting into relationships just to have shelter over my head,” said Mofokeng.

She said her mother and grandmother were also abused.

Her ex-partner burnt down her house when she finally decided to end the relationship after months of mentioning it occasionally.

Gugu Mofokeng (53) shares her new book titled Acts of a Selfless Leader.

“When I asked him to never return to my house, he attacked me and threatened to kill me while beating me, stabbing me with a teaspoon and pulling out my hair.

“While he was poking my eyes, I broke free and hid at my neighbour’s house. A few minutes later, my house was on fire. I lost everything,” she said.

Despite the pain and heartache she endured over the years, Mofokeng chose to forgive and spread love.

Napper, who is a missionary from the USA’s Christian Life Coach and the founder of Overcoming Abuse God’s Way (OAGW), helped change Mofokeng’s life.

She joined Overcoming Abuse God’s Way classes in Boksburg, which helped transform her into a strong, independent, God-fearing woman who is full of love.

Napper placed Mofokeng in a shelter for abused women and children called Beit Shalom, where she stayed for nine months while attending programmes.

Mofokeng said she learned self-reflection.

She recovered from her trauma and is now a leader, a minister of the word, transformational speaker, OAGW trainer and facilitator, mentor and entrepreneur.

She said she said most perpetrators also need help, which is why she started programmes to help both victims and perpetrators in communities.

After taking a step back to recover, Mofokeng wrote a book to share her story with the world.

With the book she hopes to inspire those who are still in the chains of abuse, to minister love to those who are feeling rejected, to transform lives, expose the works of the darkness and break the abuse cycle.

The target market is everyone who is experiencing abuse, and those who survived, are still recovering or perpetrating abuse.

The book is available for R200. To get a copy, contact Mofokeng telephonically or via WhatsApp on 079 532 1204 or 079 981 8364.

The book is also available on Amazon.
