WATCH: Thirsty Joburg south residents gatvol as water shortages continue

Linmeyer, Thulisa Park and South Crest residents picketing outside of Rand Water, Impala Road.

After not having water for at least five days, disgruntled residents were up in arms on March 14.

They picketed outside the Rand Water offices demanding answers and a long-term solution to their grievance.

This follows an explosion at Suikerbosch station which is said to have affected the Palmiet station and major reservoirs – leaving nearby residents without water.

Ward 57 councillor, Faeeza Chame, said: “the management has told us that they have had to close off some valves from other water pumps to feed the South Hills pump station so that people start getting water.”

She said it was confirmed that some of the residents had already started getting water.

Ward 56 councillor Michael Crichton said It is unfortunate that it had to get to a point where the residents had to protest outside Rand Waters offices again but this is the third major water outage that these residents have had to endure in a matter of months.

“I am of the opinion that Rand Water needs to put better measures in place to protect their infrastructure,” he said.
