A call for community to help clean a run-down property

More hands will make the work lighter when cleaning the abandoned property.

A joint operation helped in cleaning up a derelict and run-down property at 4 Lang Street in Rosettenville on August 22.

A community member, Dianne Kilian, wants to thank each one who participated in this mission.

On July 14, the MMC for Development Planning Belinda Echoezonjoku and other stakeholders met at various properties in Ward 56, one of which was this property. “We were told it needed to go to Group Forensics and Investigation Services (GFIS). However, upon investigation, we found it has been with GFIS since 2017.

“This property is a security risk for a very reputable business opposite the road, the Oakdene Vet and the community at large. This vet has serviced the community of Ward 56 and beyond and its kindness was extended beyond the line of duty for over 20 years. He has given so much to the community without asking for anything in return, so it was time to give back to the vet and his staff members’ safety, pedestrians, and clients of the vet,” she said.

This property had no building on it because of the burning down of the houses in Ward 56 over five years ago. It was overgrown with bush, is home to illegal dumping and had many hiding places for thugs.

A project was launched to clear everything and make it a presentable piece of land.

“A huge thank you to Robin Retief and his team at Transcavators, Bertie Deysel and his team from HAD Maintenance, Steve Dwarika from Guardian Angels Security for his visibility and sponsorship of a skip and Charlmaine Perreira from Jozi Ferals for the sponsored skips.

“Leon Ackerman from Oasis Aspen Village and Ridgeway Gardens kindly donated water and Christine Crossley provided the delectable food that Meals on Wheels donated to the project.

Although the project is not finished, the property is starting to look better.

“A huge thank you to Charlmaine, Raye, and Sue from Jozi Ferals for their physical labour, Charmaine for the two young men that came on your behalf, Kathy, Nigel, Anand and his guy for the help you provided, Des for sponsoring a worker on your behalf and Initec for clearing loads of rubble. Gareth Dorrington thank you for the bags and for organising another skip.

“Thank you all. I’m fully aware that I may have missed some people by name and I apologise for that. I am so grateful for all the support thus far. This job is not complete and there is still a lot of work to be done but we are getting there. Please bring your shovels, gloves and hats for every clean-up. We are hoping to complete this project by September 30. Join us every weekend and if you have 30 minutes to spare on the weekday, come through and do a few shovels for this project,” noted Dianne.
