Driver loses control, hits 13 children in La Rochelle

One child is in a critical condition after the incident.

Thirteen children were injured when they were struck by a light motor vehicle on 10th Street in La Rochelle on September 8.

ER24 and several other services arrived on the scene at 14:45 to find a light motor vehicle smashed against a street pole. Several children were lying across the pavement.

Russel Meiring, ER24 communication officer, said medics assessed the patients and found that 12 children, aged between 8 and 13, had sustained minor to moderate injuries while a 13th child was in a critical condition.

“Medics treated the children and provided the critically injured with advanced life support. Once treated, the children were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent care.

“It is understood that the driver lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer onto the pavement, crashing into the children. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” said Meiring.
