Illegal dumping births criminal acts in Alrode
Councillor Samantha Nair is preparing a petition to shutdown the Alrode dumping site as it impacts the community negatively.
As one of Alberton’s cleanest townships in the past, ward councillor Samantha Nair condemns unlawful dumping at Alrode.
This follows a complaint made by a concerned resident about the ward’s dumping site.
Some items deposited at the site include waste, rubble and bin bags. Most of the waste is subsequently carried by the strong wind to the sidewalks and houses of the residents.
Nair told the Alberton Record that the act of illegal dumping is getting worse and residents know very well that it is unacceptable.
“This has been an ongoing trend and it needs to stop immediately. I am preparing a petition to council regarding the closing of this site because we simultaneously get complaints regarding the issues faced by the community with relation to illegal dumping,” she said.
“The area is devalued and polluted by illegal dumping, which has been a problem for nearby households for years.”
Nair said that a lot of stone, brick, concrete, or other material waste or rough particles, particularly related to construction demolition waste, is dumped which makes it even harder to fight the act of illegal dumping that is dominating Alrode.
“The council needs to a plan on how they are going to get rid of this problem. Not only the site has brought pollution problems, but the site has encouraged a lot of criminal activities. This raises another issue on its own because we now have to fight two ills caused by a single problem,” Nair concluded.
