Bank card fraud suspect arrested

Fraudster gets one-year imprisonment for R6 000 fine.

Booysens SAPS management thanked Sgt Tsundzuka Kubhayi for obtaining a good conviction in a fraud case where the suspect was arrested and sentenced.

Communication officer Captain Lorraine van Emmerik said on February 10, 2013, at 14:00 the complainant was in Pretoria when he received a notification on his cellphone that R1 000 was withdrawn and he was in possession of his bank card.

“He then went to the bank and he was told that the money was withdrawn in Johannesburg and he had never been in Johannesburg. A few days later he went to the bank and the card was swallowed by the machine.

“He went inside the bank and he was told that he was issued the bank card in his name. He was told to go to home affairs to enquire about his ID. The complainant went to Soshanguve where he was told that there is fraudulent activity happening on his ID and there is someone who is trying to apply for ID using the same name,” she said.

The complainant then opened a case of fraud. The docket was given to Kubhayi for investigation and a suspect was arrested. The docket was placed at the court and after all the outstanding information was obtained, the docket was ready for the trial.

The suspect was found guilty and sentenced to one year in prison for a R6 000 fine.
