Meyersdal Smurfs hit the Sevens in Cape Town
Very popular were the Meyersdal Smurfs who featured regularly on the cameras at the Sevens in Cape Town.
Charmaine and Andy Gouws along with their family from Meyersdal proved to be a huge hit by dressing as the Smurfs at the Sevens Rugby finals in Cape Town.
“My family are rugby fanatics and have always travelled to Loftus to support the Bulls Rugby team,” said Charmaine.
The Rugby Sevens have always been one of their passions and they will always wake up in the early hours of the morning just to watch the Blitzbokke when they played overseas.
“Our bucket-list goal was to go to Cape Town for the Sevens World Cup in September last year, but alas my husband had an ankle operation and our plans had to change.”
As a consolation, the family decided they had to go to Cape Town in December to support the Blitzbokke and with a new coach, they needed all the support they could get.
“My granddaughter Tanith is 17 years old and she is very creative and outrageous. It was her idea to dress up as The Smurfs family.
“Impossible we thought, but we would investigate it. Well, have you tried finding blue body paint in bulk in Johannesburg? And Tanith was determined that we would go as the Smurfs, no matter what!”
The family eventually managed to get the body paint.

“We have never had so much fun as a family,” said Charmaine.
Getting ready took hours and there were many hesitant moments too.
“We drove via the Park n Ride from the City Centre to the stadium. And if someone ever tells you that blue paint does not rub off, think again. And of course, the hilarious time when it started raining (paint is not waterproof),” said Charmaine laughingly.
The Smurfs from Meyersdal were a hit wherever they went they had to stop and pose for photos. Charmaine said that the Smurf character, Gargamel, stole the show.
“We encourage other families to have fun together, and thanks to Tanith it was a day we will always remember.”
