Dedicated officer hangs up his crime-fighting gloves

After 33 years in the service, outgoing officer Captain Jan Smal has decided it is time to hang his gloves of fighting crime in the streets of Alberton.

Captain Jan Smal’s journey in the force took off at the age of 20 and he was determined to sweep crime off the streets and uphold the law.

He joined the force solely because of his unwavering love of wanting to become a public servant and has, continuously, over the years, gone beyond the call of duty.

The 52-year-old public servant has served in the force for 33 years. Having worked at Langlaagte, Mondeor SAPS, and Johannesburg Central Police Station, he later moved to Alberton SAPS.

Showing appreciation to the community and his colleagues, he said he will forever miss the station and the connection he had with locals.

“Alberton is a lovely community, and community members are always willing to work with the police. Alberton is a difficult area in terms of crime, but our members try their best to solve it. The relationship I had with my workmates was very good because they carried me through,” said Smal.

In an exclusive interview, the Meyerton resident told the Alberton Record he was leaving the force to pursue something different.

Captain Manare Ramotshela of Alberton SAPS described Smal as an officer who worked fairly well with his colleagues and forever put the interests of the community first.
