JSPCA, NPO join in celebration of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

Marx said because their visit will happen just before Easter, they also want to bring the children as many teddy bears and Easter eggs as possible.

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, a month-long event for organisations like the JSPCA dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of animal welfare and the critical role organisations play in protecting animals from cruelty and neglect.

Pubic relations and marketing manager of the JSPCA, Liana Marx, said animal welfare is a crucial issue that affects animals of all species and backgrounds.

“Every year, countless animals suffer abuse, neglect, and exploitation. That is why we are so passionate about our work and dedicated to providing animals with the love, care, and protection they deserve.

Our team of dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to rescue and rehabilitate animals subjected to abuse or neglect.

We also provide education and outreach programmes to help people understand the importance of treating animals with respect and compassion. To support Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, the JSPCA is working with Abraham Kriel Bambanani, a registered NPO, that provides care and skills development for traumatised children and youth in need in the greater Johannesburg area.

“We are planning a visit on April 6 with two of our SPCA mascots, Lola and her friend Merlin, the Great Dane. We aim to introduce the children to pets and give them basic animal husbandry knowledge,” said Marx.

Marx said because their visit will happen just before Easter, they also want to bring the children as many teddy bears and Easter eggs as possible.

“We are asking for everyone’s support to help bring a smile to the children’s faces by donating any unwanted (clean, not badly damaged) teddy bears to these children and also give a R10 donation, per bear, to the SPCA. This way, you can help the children and the animals.”

Marx went on to say that all animals have the right to a life free of cruelty and neglect, and they are committed to doing everything in their power to ensure this is the case. However, they need the communities’ support to continue providing vital services to animals in need.

“This is why working with an organisation like Abraham Kriel Bambanani supports this larger vision of ensuring that even at a young age, people understand the beauty of pets and how to care for them.

“We encourage everyone to get involved in Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, whether through volunteering, donating, or adopting a pet. There are many ways you can make a difference in the lives of animals. Together, we can make a difference and create a world where all animals are treated with love, care, and respect,” said Marx.

Teddy bear donations can be dropped off at the JSPCA at 5 Benray Road, Reuven, Johannesburg. If you want to support the JSPCA, email pr@jspce.co.za
