City encourages women to examine for breast cancer

Mammograms are often the most effective way for women to detect breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it has grown large enough to feel or produce symptoms. The CoE advises locals to have mammograms because they can reduce the likelihood of dying from breast cancer.

The CoE urges locals to visit their nearest clinic to get tested for breast cancer.

The health calendar of events declared October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year’s theme is ‘Keeping her in the picture’. The purpose behind the theme is to support and encourage women affected by breast cancer.

Statistics show that breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in women. Additionally, it is most common in white and Asian women and second in African and coloured women.

Overall, South African women have a one in nine chance or possibility of getting breast cancer.

The city invites all women to attend any of its clinics, where trained specialists can find lumps or additional irregularities in their breasts. The clinics are open from 08:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday.

No appointment is required.
