JMPD’s intensified operations yield over 800 arrests
JMPD's efforts align with the national goal of reducing road accidents and promoting safety.
The JMPD has been cracking down on reckless driving, arresting over 800 motorists for driving under the influence (DUI) and excessive speeding between December 1 last year and January 5.
This intensified effort aims to combat lawlessness, enhance road safety, and reduce the alarming rate of serious and fatal accidents in Johannesburg.
The numbers are staggering: 512 motorists were arrested for DUI, with Region F (including the Joburg CBD and surrounding areas) recording the highest number of arrests, at over 300.
Region D, covering Soweto, followed closely with over 100 arrests. Additionally, the JMPD’s High-Speed Unit apprehended 364 motorists for excessive speeding.

The consequences of DUI and excessive speeding are severe, including loss of life, injuries, and legal repercussions like fines, imprisonment, and license suspension or revocation.
Moreover, accidents can have devastating emotional and psychological impacts on victims, their families, and the broader community.
To address these issues, the JMPD will continue its high-visibility patrols, roadblocks, and targeted enforcement in high-risk areas, collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and the community.
The JMPD urges all road users to exercise caution, adhere to traffic laws, and prioritise road safety.
