3 killed in South Hills ‘gang-related’ shootings

South Hills is reeling from a wave of violent crime after two men were shot dead on Saturday, followed by the fatal shooting of a scholar transport driver outside Suidheuwels Primary School today.

Moffat View SAPS Station Commander, Colonel Shunny Govender, said: “On Saturday, Sergeant Mabunda responded to a report of a murder at the corner of Geneva and Steelpoort streets.

“Upon arrival, he found two men with multiple gunshot wounds. One had eight, and the other had four. Both victims were declared dead on the scene by emergency services,” he said.

Govender said the men, who had no identification on them, are still unidentified. The motive for the killings is unknown, and no witnesses have come forward.

“Forensic teams processed the scene, and police are investigating,” said Govender.

Just two days later, another tragedy struck South Hills. A scholar transport driver was gunned down outside Suidheuwels Primary School in what police suspect is a gang-related incident.

Sergeant Mabunda attended the scene and found a white VW Microbus that had hit a wall. Inside, there was a person who had been shot in the driver’s seat.

“There were used cartridges on the front passenger seat. The paramedics were called and certified the person dead. He had multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body,” said Govender.

Govender said the motive for the crime is unknown at the moment. The family was also at the scene. Forensic teams processed the scene, and police are investigating.

Recent Fatal Shootings 

The series of suspected gang-related public fatal shootings is not new in the area.

In September, a man was shot and killed, and another was injured in a gang-related attack at a park while having refreshments.

“The victims were relaxing in the park and having beers when they were approached by two males who shot them with 9mm pistols,” said Govender.

Days later, another man was shot and killed on the corner of Geneva and Steelpoort streets.

“The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and head and ultimately succumbed to his injuries,” he said.
