Dalmondeor Primary maintenance man accused of rape
A 31-year-old man appeared in court following accusations by a mother who claims her seven-year-old daughter was raped on the school premises.
A case involving allegations of rape at Dalmondeor Primary School in Mondeor has led to the arrest of a 31-year-old man.
The incident reportedly occurred on May 21 on the school’s premises. The victim is said to be a seven-year-old Grade Two learner from Dalmondeor Primary.
The suspect, employed as a maintenance worker at the school, was accused by the alleged victim’s mother, who claimed he raped her child.
The case has garnered significant attention from members of the school community, including school governing body (SGB) members and parents of learners, many of whom were present in court.
Police reportedly received a medical report confirming the learner had been assaulted; however, the report did not identify the perpetrator. The suspect was subsequently arrested as the main suspect on May 27.
He appeared at the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on June 5.
As the accused resides at the school, he was instructed to find alternative accommodation. After the case was briefly stood down, Mr Tebogo Mokgadi, the SGB chairperson at Dalmondeor Primary, provided the court with an address where the accused would stay for the duration of the court proceedings.
“He will stay with his relative until the case is over,” said Mokgadi.
Magistrate Hasina Habib offered the suspect the option of having a court-appointed attorney. He accepted, and Mr Chauke was appointed to represent him.
A postponement was proposed to allow verification of the suspect’s new address. “I will postpone the matter until June 10 for the address to be verified,” said Habib.
