The Hill cash-in-transit heist: sentencing postponed to December
Sentencing proceedings for the 11 convicted men were delayed for a third time.
The Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, today delayed the sentencing proceedings of 11 convicted gang members to December 7 and 8.
The case was previously postponed on July 7 because the pre-sentencing report had not been completed.
It was then set down for September 21–23, but proceedings could not continue as the judge was reportedly off sick.
All 11 accused remain in custody following their convictions.
Convictions
Ten of the accused – Sihle Mazibuko, Menziwe Shabalala, Qaphelani Ngubeni, Kitso Mnguni, Hloniphani Dube, Phendulani Mvubu, Mike Ngwadi, Andrew Thobolo, Khulekani Nkosi and Alex Motjebele – were convicted of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives, and conspiracy to commit robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The 11th accused, Sandile Gasa, was convicted of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Shoot-out
The deadly shoot-out took place on February 21, 2022, mainly at the intersection of Friars Hill and Gotthard roads in The Hill.
Eight suspected cash-in-transit heist suspects were shot and killed during the confrontation with police.
According to the then minister of police, Bheki Cele, the suspects were allegedly part of a criminal group operating across KwaZulu-Natal, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Cele said at the time that the suspects had been under police surveillance since the previous week and were allegedly linked to cash-in-transit heists in Dawn Park and other areas.
The matter will return to court on December 7 and 8 for sentencing proceedings.
