Johannesburg Water must take reinstatements more seriously
There are more reinstatements needed in Ward 56.
Verona Street in Rosettenville, between Prairie and Albert Streets, needs a huge reinstatement.
Over the years, the City of Johannesburg battled to reinstate roads and pavements mostly because entities like Johannesburg Water (JW) and City Power had to dig up the roads and/or pavements to work on their infrastructure, only to leave a gaping hole once finished.
Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton said that historically, there had been a Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and these entities. But recently, the onus fell on the relevant entity to fix the infrastructure they dug up.
In the case of JW, this worked well until they seemingly ran into payment issues with their contractor. Now, several holes they left on the road have not been unattended to.
“Of particular concern is the hole on Verona Street, Rosettenville, between Prairie and Albert Streets. This hole has deepened, causing chaos with the traffic on this busy intersection because cars often swerve to miss this hole and nearly cause an accident, or they go through it and risk damaging their vehicles.
“The issue has been outstanding since the end of March. I hope JW attends to this issue as a matter of urgency. It is very dangerous. The last thing we want is an accident here because of this hole.
“Long-outstanding reinstatements also needed to be resolved on Prairie Street in Rosettenville, Heks River and Tafelberg drives in Oakdene, to name a few across the ward. I will keep putting as much pressure as possible on them for these issues to be resolved,” he said.
JW is aware of the hole on Verona Street.
