The gathering – which saw Gauteng Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko present the keynote address, was attended by the local community and leaders of NPOs fighting the scourge of drug and substance abuse.

The Department of Social Development in Gauteng hosted an engagement with community members in the South Hills area.

This engagement aims to establish working centres that feed the NPO sector and government rehabilitation centres.

The engagement was at the South Hills Community Hall and featured activists and leaders of NPOs at the forefront of combatting drug and substance abuse in the Gauteng province.

The gathering forms part of the department’s series of imbizo gatherings where they share knowledge and ideas in anti-drug and substance abuse.

High-ranking officials from social development attended the event, including Gauteng Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko.

Mazibuko gave the keynote address and led a ‘question and answer’ session with those in attendance. She requested suggestions and comments from those gathered inside the hall. Recovering drug addicts and illegal substance users also had an opportunity to engage the MEC.

Asked about the funding backlog for many NPOs in Gauteng, Mazibuko said: “The majority of the backlogs have been cleared and their tranches of money are coming in. NPOs should hit the ground running and ensure their services are available and accessible to all the beneficiaries that need them.”

Mazibuko also called on NPOs to work with the government to fight drug and substance abuse.
