Accusations against Moffat View SAPS addressed

After residents of Ward 57 made allegations against the Moffat View SAPS and the station commander Lieutenant Colonel Shunny Govender regarding poor leadership and corruption, the Moffat View SAPS and the Southern Courier met to set the record straight.

In attendance were Govender, Captain Jeff Phora, Captain Erasmus Small, CPF representative Clarence Ntshangase and public relations officers.

All the representatives rubbished claims of corruption and a lack of leadership.

A key issue raised at the meeting was about an illegal protest on October 11 in Elands Park. Residents wanted an issue of an informal settlement in the area to be addressed.

“Residents want the police to remove the squatter camp but where do we move them? Residents need to consider that,” said Small.

“They blocked every road in the area surrounding the informal settlement and burnt tyres. Moffat View SAPS requested the cars blocking the roads be removed and met with resistance from community members; therefore, we made arrests.

“The police made two arrests and more could have been, as there was extreme resistance from community members. The Public Order Police were called, and the protest ended,” said Govender.

“Residents demanded the two people to be released, and they were out on bail. We opened a case of public violence, which will be heard in court. This incident has caused the community to accuse the officers involved without evidence to prove these allegations,” he continued.

Moffat View SAPS ensure they serve the community as best as they can to help them feel safe. They also urged the community to aid in crime prevention in the area.
