The Festival of Lights, known as Diwali or Deepavali, is a vibrant celebration that signifies life, freedom, and the release from tyranny. Observed by Hindus around the world, including in South Africa, this significant holiday is marked by prayer, festive gatherings, and the illuminating power of light overcoming darkness.

According to Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame, “The universal message of the triumph of good over evil is symbolised by light overcoming darkness and illuminating the night sky.” Diwali is a time for offering sweet treats and gifts to family and friends, reminding us of our shared humanity and the importance of togetherness, tolerance, peace, and happiness.

This year, Diwali will be celebrated over two days: October 31 and November 1.

Clr Chame urges all Hindus celebrating with fireworks to inform their neighbours and community about their celebrations, emphasising the need to adhere to the times, rules, and regulations set by the Bylaws of the City of Joburg. She stated, “Fireworks are permitted only between 19:00 and 22:00.”

Additionally, Clr Chame encourages everyone to be mindful of their pets during this lively time. “Keeping them in a safe environment or considering medication based on your vet’s advice can help ensure their well-being,” she advises.
