E-waste recycling initiative launched in Soweto

Setting a precedent for sustainable waste management practices in South Africa.

In a ground-breaking initiative, Pikitup, in partnership with e-WASA and waste reclaimers, launched an e-waste recycling programme at the Marie Louise landfill site in Soweto on December 11.

This innovative project aims to divert electronic waste from landfill sites, whose lifespans are rapidly diminishing.

MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Jack Sekwaila emphasised the importance of this collaboration.

“This project will extend the life of Pikitup’s remaining landfill sites and mitigate the harmful effects of electronic waste on our residents and the environment,” said Sekwaila.

As part of the initiative, e-WASA has contributed containers, tools, and equipment to support waste reclaimers.
The organisation has also invested R1.1m in equipment and committed to incentivising reclaimers by paying 15 cents per kilogram of e-waste collected and sold.

This pioneering project aligns with the national policy directive issued by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) and sets a precedent for sustainable waste management practices in South Africa.
