City Power tackles electricity theft with action plan at City Deep project
Utility’s oversight visit reveals ongoing theft challenges, prompting a comprehensive action plan.
City Power (CP) officials uncovered significant challenges related to electricity theft at the City Deep project during a recent oversight visit on January 24.
The visit followed a media statement highlighting the effect of illegal connections on 122 rental units and some businesses.
To combat these issues, CP implemented a comprehensive action plan, focusing on prepaid meter oversight, infrastructure security enhancements, tenant education campaigns and engagement sessions, and accountability measures.
These initiatives aim to prevent tampering, ensure accurate billing and promote tenant compliance.
Prepaid meter issues have been a constant since the inception of the new version of the meter known as the Key Revision Number (KRN) 2. CP is still dealing with problems regarding the rollout. The new meters’ software update prevents tampering that aids illegal connections.
“We take electricity theft seriously and are committed to working with all stakeholders to prevent it. Introducing the KRN2 meter will be key to minimising theft and illegal connections.,” said Isaac Mangena, CP’s spokesperson.
“Our goal is to ensure all residents have access to safe and reliable electricity, and we will continue to work tirelessly to achieve this,” he continued.
CP is committed to improving service delivery, fostering trust with tenants and ensuring safe, reliable access to electricity for all residents.
By working closely with stakeholders, it aims to implement effective, long-term solutions to address electricity theft and promote operational efficiency.
