Mall of the South’s sculpture competition redefines holiday decor

Discover how the Mall of the South’s innovative sculpture competition promotes sustainability and showcases local artistic talent.

The Mall of the South’s Recycle, Reimagine, Renew Sculpture Competition gave some of Johannesburg’s best artists and sculptors a platform to display their works.

Last year, the mall invited local artists to create sculptures highlighting environmental conservation and the power of reimagining waste as art.

Eight shortlisted pieces were displayed throughout the mall, replacing conventional festive decorations.

Customers could vote for their favourite sculptures, with the top two winners receiving R20 000 each.

On February 3, a ceremony at the mall announced the two competition winners.

Artist Mmutla Kgwanka won for his ballerina sculpture, while Pholile Hlongwane took second place for her whale tail sculpture.

Kgwanka spoke about his intention to use his prize money to invest in upcoming young artists, “I want to use this as an opportunity to uplift local art and artists.”

Hlongwane expressed her desire to continue making art, “I want to continue with my art. I am thankful for this opportunity. The prize money will help me in many ways.”

The public admires the sculptures on display.

Both winners’ masterpieces will be permanently displayed at Entrance 5 at the mall, serving as a lasting reminder of the power of sustainability and creativity.

By supporting local talent and engaging the community in voting, the mall’s initiative aligns with its commitment to sustainability.

This innovative competition showcased artistic innovation and promoted eco-conscious living, making it an impactful initiative.
