City of Johannesburg launches mass clean-up operation

The City of Johannesburg's clean-up teams take to the streets to collect rubbish.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) clean-up teams were out in full force, tackling the inner city and southern suburbs in a mass cleaning operation.

The initiative, dubbed #KleenaJoburg, aimed to collect rubbish, eliminate public dumping sites, and encourage recycling.

Teams worked in Fordsburg, Rosettenville, Mondeor, and Booysens to clean bins, collect litter, and identify illegal dumping hotspots.

CoJ speaker Nobuhle Mthembu spoke at a media gathering. “We have a beautiful city and keep it clean and operational for one another.

“The city will send out cleaning crews, but I want to emphasise that citizens must respect the environment by using rubbish bins and not discarding litter from car windows. A major issue is illegal dumping,” said Mthembu.

City officials were also on hand to monitor and prevent illegal dumping on public property and roads.

Littering offenders face fines, and the JMPD may arrest those illegally dumping waste.

The #KleenaJoburg initiative is part of the city’s broader efforts to reimagine and revitalise Johannesburg (#JoburgReimagined).

By promoting a culture of cleanliness and sustainability, the city aims to create a more beautiful and livable urban environment for all its residents.
