Verify City Power employees or contractor IDs before granting access
When in doubt, immediately contact City Power’s security risk management control.
City Power (CP) warns its customers about fraudulent activities. Unauthorised people are using fake ID cards or none at all and posing as CP employees or contractors.
CP urges its customers to be alert and always verify the identification of anyone claiming to be CP personnel before granting them access to their properties.
There have been reports of criminals using fake metre reading credentials to gain access to customers’ homes and businesses to rob them.
To protect against scams, CP advises customers to verify the credentials of its employees and contractors by contacting its security risk management control room (SRMCR), their service delivery centre (SDC) or checking with their ward councillor to confirm if work is scheduled for their area.
All CP staff and contractors must carry and produce their official ID cards on duty.
These cards are colour-coded according to the sections in CP and show important identifying information, including:
• the photo and personal details of the employee or contractor;
• the contractor’s verification number (badge number) and expiry date;
• a firefly hologram for added security;
• SRMCR contact details on the back of the ID cards for easy verification.
CP advises customers to verify the authenticity of ID cards before allowing anyone onto their premises. If a card appears damaged or scratched or the photo or name is not visible, immediately report it to the SRMCR.
To verify the legitimacy of a CP employee or contractor, customers can:
• contact the SRMCR on 011 490 7900/ 7911/ 7553/ 7504 or via WhatsApp on 083 579 4497.
• Request the job number, which can be verified through our SRMCR.
CP appreciates customers’ co-operation in maintaining the integrity of its services and protecting their properties.
