SASSA explains delay in social grants during eligibility checks

SASSA ensures fair allocation of funds through review process.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has addressed concerns about delays in the disbursement of social grants, clarifying that these delays are temporary and part of an ongoing process to ensure eligibility.

Despite circulating reports suggesting that social grants were being suspended, Sassa has confirmed that no grants have been suspended, only delayed due to a necessary review of beneficiaries’ eligibility.

The review process is critical for maintaining the integrity of South Africa’s social grant system, ensuring that funds are distributed to those who are rightfully entitled to receive them.

Sassa’s CEO, Mr. Themba Matlou, explained that the review checks are for several key factors, including eligibility confirmation, prevention of fraud, and ensuring proper allocation of funds.

Review process:

To complete the review process, beneficiaries will need to provide the following documents:

• Valid South African ID (13-digit barcoded ID or smart card)

• Proof of income (payslips, pension slips, or an affidavit if unemployed)

• Bank statements for the last three months for all active bank accounts

• Proof of residence (utility bill or letter from a local authority)

• Medical report (if applicable for disability or care dependency grants)

• Marriage certificate or divorce decree (if applicable)

• Death certificate (if applicable)

• Birth certificates and proof of school attendance (for child support or foster care grants)

How to proceed:

Beneficiaries can undergo the review process by visiting their nearest Sassa office or by appointing a representative to assist them if they are unable to visit in person due to health reasons or mobility challenges.

Sassa is also introducing self-service options through online platforms to streamline the review process and reduce waiting times.

It is crucial for beneficiaries to respond to Sassa’s review requests and provide the required documentation to avoid disruptions in their payments. By adhering to the review process, beneficiaries can help ensure that social grants are allocated fairly and effectively, reaching those who need them most.
