Mandela Day drive aims to uplift over 2 000 lives in the south

Over 2 000 vulnerable individuals are expected to benefit from SOJO’s Mandela Day campaign at Momos Upliftment Centre.

In honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, the SOJO Helping Hands Foundation, in partnership with Mall of the South, Gold Reef City, and Epiroc (New Concept Mining), is calling on the community to come together in service of others this Mandela Day.

On July 18, the foundation will host a large-scale outreach event at Momos Upliftment Centre, where they aim to provide food, clothing, and essential items to more than 2 000 vulnerable individuals from across the south.

This year’s campaign builds on the success of the 2024 event, which saw over 1 400 people benefit from hot meals, hygiene packs, and warm clothing.

The initiative also empowered local caregivers and upliftment centres and encouraged over 100 volunteers to lend a helping hand in their communities.

The 2025 #HelpThyNeighbour campaign is supported by a growing list of sponsors, including:

Howden, Buntu Kraal Emporium, iProp, Momos Upliftment Centre, Cutting Edge, Legends Barber, Pick n Pay Mall of the South, Clicks Mall of the South, Dis-Chem Mall of the South, Seetsong Tea, Apartheid Museum, Thaba Eco Hotel, Mount Like Eagles Mission, New Concept Mining, Gold Reef City, Resthaven Ministries, Just Darling, Simply For Entertainment, Taj Mall of the South, Visions of Joy, Bidvest Prestige, Jam Clothing, Bontle Hair and Beauty, Khulisa Social Services, Addicts Voice, Lenkwane Group and Stallion Security.

“These partners are proving that meaningful change can come from corporate social responsibility done right,” the organisers said.

Get involved

Residents, community groups, and small businesses who want to participate in this year’s drive are encouraged to donate goods, volunteer their time, or provide in-kind support such as non-perishable foods, hygiene items, clothing, or services.

Those who wish to contribute can email info@sojo.co.za by July 16.

“Together, we can honour Mandela’s vision of a caring and compassionate society,” SOJO said.
