Joburg South residents reject land sale over infrastructure concerns

Community warns of worsening congestion, service failures, and environmental damage if Region F land parcels are sold for development

Residents of Joburg South are voicing strong objections to the proposed sale of several land parcels in Region F, raising urgent concerns about the strain additional development would place on already fragile infrastructure.

The land parcels in question include Portion 3 of Farm Rietvlei 101 IR, Portion 8 of Farm Palmietfontein 141 IR, and the remainder of Portion 1 of Farm Liefde en Vrede.

Key concerns centre on overburdened infrastructure, worsening traffic congestion, and limited municipal capacity to maintain existing services.

Residents warn that introducing further population density will only intensify current problems, such as recurring electricity faults and ongoing water supply interruptions.

In addition, surrounding road networks are already heavily congested, and any new developments could further compromise road safety.

Concerned resident Eunice Mofama said, “I urge the authorities to reconsider the sale and future development of these land portions. I recommend a comprehensive infrastructure impact assessment with full community consultation to determine the viability and responsibility of such developments.”

The community is calling for a transparent and thorough evaluation of the potential consequences of these sales to ensure that development in the area is responsible and sustainable.
