Spreading love and light on Mandela Day
Merchants of Light fed 2 410 people and distributed 400 grocery hampers with Kit Kat Cash and Carry.
In line with the Mandela Day theme, “It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” Merchants of Light NPO, Virgin Active Bedfordview, Kit Kat Cash and Carry Benoni and Toyota Knights spent the day giving back to the community of Primrose, Germiston.
Merchants of Light believe that small acts of kindness such as a bowl of food, a warm blanket or a gesture of love can build stronger communities and ultimately a stronger nation.
They thanked Virgin Active Bedfordview and Kit Kat Cash and Carry for supporting the initiative. A total of 150 grocery hampers were distributed, each supporting a family of four.
A loaf of bread and a hot meal were served to 250 people, who also received bags of oranges, clothing and blankets.
Outreach programmes are conducted regularly. The success of these efforts depends on support from like-minded business partners who believe in making a difference.
During Mandela Week, Merchants of Light fed 2 410 people and distributed 400 grocery hampers in Germiston, Primrose, Kensington, Rosettenville, Turffontein, Kliptown and Pimville, Soweto.
The organisation also runs ongoing projects throughout the year. These include weekly feeding schemes, school shoe and stationery drives, and disaster relief efforts. They provide toiletries, mattresses and blankets for people affected by floods and fires and prepare meals that offer both nourishment and hope.
