Seniors on the Go programme brings joy and safety to Mondeor community
With support from local businesses and authorities, seniors in Mondeor were treated to a special breakfast, receiving essential safety advice and health screenings.
In an effort to bring the elderly together and ensure their safety, CPF Mondeor Sector 2 recently hosted a special breakfast for seniors in the Mondeor precinct at Golden Falls Spur.
The event, part of the longstanding Seniors on the Go programme, saw the forum and its sponsors come together to treat senior citizens to a warm meal while also offering vital safety information.

The initiative is designed to support and uplift elderly community members, a group often overlooked, yet crucial to maintaining the safety and vibrancy of the neighbourhood.
According to Shane Thaver, chairperson of Mondeor CPF Sector 2, seniors are often the most observant and vigilant members of society.

“It brings our community together. The seniors are the most vigilant and experienced, as well as having strong intuition,” Thaver said. “It’s important to bring our seniors to a safe space and assure them that an active CPF is looking out for them.”
While the breakfast provided an opportunity for companionship and good food, it also allowed for valuable discussions on safety.

Representatives from Fox Security and Mondeor SAPS addressed the group, emphasising the importance of awareness around potential threats and highlighting how seniors can play a role in creating safer spaces. Ward 54 councillor Stuart Marais also attended, offering support and reinforcing the need for community collaboration.
The Seniors on the Go programme demonstrates the power of community involvement, with backing from sponsors including Sasol garage Swartgoud Suideroord, Golden Falls Spur, ER24, and CPF executive members.

ER24 Johannesburg South also offered free blood pressure testing, enabling seniors to take care of their health as well as their safety.
For many attendees, the event was about more than food or information; it was about being seen, heard, and valued. Many seniors have witnessed and experienced much over the years and often hold the key to helping create safer, more connected communities.

“Sadly, the elderly are often the most vulnerable in our society, facing abuse, neglect, and isolation,” Thaver said. “By bringing together seniors, local authorities, and businesses, initiatives like Seniors on the Go ensure they feel included, supported, and empowered to contribute to their communities.”
The breakfast was warmly received, with many seniors expressing gratitude for the chance to connect, learn how to protect themselves, and be reminded that their well-being matters.

The event also highlighted the vital role seniors play in community safety, from reporting suspicious activity to helping foster a secure environment for all.
“We want to create a space where seniors feel safe, valued, and informed. It’s not just about looking after them; it’s about empowering them to be part of the solution,” said Thaver.

The success of the event paves the way for more initiatives aimed at engaging and including the elderly. By providing resources, information, and the support of local organisations, CPF Mondeor Sector 2 is fostering an environment where every resident, regardless of age, can thrive.

“This initiative is a reminder that the elderly have much to offer, and their role in building safer communities cannot be overstated. By supporting them and ensuring they have the tools to stay safe, we all benefit from stronger, more connected neighbourhoods,” Thaver added.
