WATCH: Community unites to plant trees at Glenvista High in celebration of Arbor Month
Local leaders, volunteers, and learners joined hands at Glenvista High School for a tree-planting initiative supporting Johannesburg’s goal to create a greener, climate-smart city.
In celebration of Arbor Month, a community outreach programme took place at Glenvista High School in Ward 23 on September 30, where various trees were planted.
The event was attended by local leaders, including Members of the Johannesburg Mayoral Committee (MMC) Loyiso Masuku and Mahlengi Bhengu.
The tree-planting initiative symbolised hope, unity, and prosperity, while contributing to the South African Presidential Flagship Campaign to plant 10 million trees by 2030.

Event organiser Nkululeko Buthelezi highlighted the importance of community involvement. “Community work and nature conservation are what will foster partnerships in building a better future for all,” he said.

Glenvista High School was commended for being a beacon of hope despite various challenges. Principal Dr. Thabile Morgan added: “Trees represent life and provide numerous environmental benefits. I want to thank everyone responsible for this donation and for choosing our school.”

Johannesburg has set an ambitious target to plant 50 000 new trees by June 2026 as part of its initiative to create a climate-smart city.

The effort aims to address environmental challenges and promote a greener, more resilient future for residents.
