JRA explains halt in Rand Airport Road resurfacing delays

Work stopped due to asphalt production challenges, but the agency says resurfacing will resume before December if weather allows.

Alberton Record recently reported on the frustration of residents and councillors after resurfacing work on Rand Airport Road was abandoned midway, leaving the road in a dangerous condition.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has now confirmed the reason for the halt and outlined when work is expected to resume.

Kwazela Mcetywa, head of the JRA’s Department of Infrastructure Development, said the agency faced challenges that temporarily affected its in-house ability to produce asphalt, forcing the project to pause.

“These issues have since been resolved, and JRA can now produce asphalt,” said Mcetywa.

Motorists welcome the repairs, because rain would make the potholes less visible to motorists.

He added that they expected resurfacing on Rand Airport Road to resume within the current quarter, which ends in December, subject to favourable weather conditions.

The agency has also committed to providing regular public updates as work progresses.

“The department will issue a traffic advisory when roadworks resume and once resurfacing is completed on Rand Airport Road,” Mcetywa said.
