Nova Pioneer Ormonde Primary builds community through care circles
Nova Pioneer Ormonde Primary is nurturing emotional well-being through Care Circles. Care Circles are safe and supportive spaces where learners and teachers share, listen, and build empathy every day.
As South Africa marks Mental Health Awareness Month, Nova Pioneer Ormonde Primary has placed emotional well-being at the heart of its learning environment through the launch of an innovative initiative known as Care Circles.
Care Circles are structured group conversations where learners and teachers come together in a safe and respectful space to share their feelings, experiences and perspectives.
More than simply dialogue, the sessions are designed to cultivate trust, empathy and resilience while strengthening the bonds within the school community.
The school’s communication coordinator, Mofenyi Kgamane, said every voice matters in their classrooms.
“Through Care Circles, we not only encourage academic growth, but also emotional growth. We want to raise learners who are confident, empathetic and able to navigate challenges both inside and outside of school,” he said.
The initiative echoes this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month theme, which underscores the importance of fostering supportive spaces where individuals can express themselves openly and feel a sense of belonging.

At Nova Pioneer Ormonde, Care Circles focus on:
• Encouraging empathy and understanding between learners
• Supporting emotional well-being through open conversation
• Promoting learners’ voice and participation in school life
• Creating a culture of respect, inclusion and belonging
Parents and educators who have attended recent sessions have praised the initiative, noting its positive impact on learner relationships and classroom dynamics.
Many believe the approach not only enhances mental wellness but also equips learners with the emotional intelligence and compassion needed to lead in the future.
By embedding Care Circles into everyday school life, Nova Pioneer Ormonde is sending a clear message:
Education is not only about academics, but about shaping emotionally healthy, resilient young people who can thrive in a complex and fast-changing world.
