Residents urged to stay cautious as heavy downpours hit
City teams are on high alert as heavy rains sweep through the area, with residents advised to take precautions to stay safe.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 9 Disruptive Rain Warning for Ekurhuleni, effective from November 16.
Heavy rain is expected, with 100mm to 150mm forecasted, which could lead to widespread flooding of roads and settlements and pose a danger to life due to fast-flowing water.
Expected impacts
-
Widespread flooding: Roads and low-lying areas may flood, causing disruptions and damage.
-
Danger to life: Fast-moving water poses a significant threat, especially near rivers and streams.
-
Displacement and power interruptions: Households may be displaced, and electricity outages are possible.
Precautions before a flood
-
Stay informed: Monitor weather forecasts, local news, and official emergency alerts.
-
Know your risk and plan: Understand your home’s flood risk and evacuation routes. Include pets in your plan.
-
Prepare an emergency kit: Include non-perishable food, bottled water, medications, first-aid kit, flashlights, radio with batteries, important documents in a waterproof container, and a change of clothes.
-
Protect your home: Clear gutters and drains and move valuables and electrical appliances to higher floors.
During a flood
-
Evacuate if instructed: Follow orders immediately and leave early.
-
Move to higher ground: Seek refuge on the highest level of a sturdy building. Avoid closed attics.
-
Avoid floodwaters: Never walk, swim, or drive through flooded areas. Just 15cm of fast-moving water can knock someone off their feet, and 30–60cm can sweep away most vehicles. Floodwater may also be contaminated or electrically charged.
-
Shut off utilities if safe: Turn off electricity, gas, and water at main switches/valves without touching wet equipment.
-
Stay indoors and keep safe: Avoid flooded areas, move valuables to higher ground, and keep children away from rivers and streams.
City emergency teams are on high alert. Residents are urged to take precautions and stay informed through official channels.
