Relief on Swartkoppies Road as new traffic lights set to improve safety

The upgrade aims to curb crashes, improve traffic flow, and end years of frequent outages caused by vandalism and cable theft.

New traffic lights are being installed on Swartkoppies Road and Kliprivier Drive in Alberton. The upgrade is expected to significantly improve road safety and reduce congestion.

The intersection has been plagued by a high number of accidents over the past four years, causing concern among residents and commuters.

The traffic lights have also been vandalised over the years, which has contributed to them being out of order.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (DRT) has been working with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to address traffic signal issues across the city, including Swartkoppies Road.

The new traffic lights are part of a larger effort to restore and maintain traffic infrastructure in Johannesburg, with a focus on improving safety and reducing vandalism.

The JRA has faced challenges in maintaining traffic lights, including vandalism, cable theft, and limited resources. However, with the installation of new traffic lights on Swartkoppies Road, residents can expect a safer and more efficient commute.

The city is also exploring alternative technologies, such as underground chambers and electronic strips, to protect traffic signals from vandalism.

“We know that Swartkoppies Road in Joburg south has been an issue for a few years now, and we are happy that we have finally made progress in installing new traffic lights. We hope to continue the good work. We also want to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation,” said JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers.
